The Steeplechase Horse: How to Select, Train, and Ride Him

The Steeplechase Horse, written by Captain John Humfrey, provides detailed instruction on how to select, prepare, and condition a horse for the rigors of the chase. Originally published in 1879, this historically significant work captures the character of the steeplechase itself as a test of skill and partnership between horse and rider. In addition to his guidance on training and riding, Humfrey emphasizes the importance of patience in preparation, firmness in handling, and the mutual confidence needed to compete under the most demanding conditions. As both a manual for horsemen and a reflection of sporting culture in Victorian England, this book is a valuable reference for students of equestrian history and readers interested in competitive riding.
